Park and Police

So today was interesting.  Normally, my husband (the evangelist) goes with a pastor of a local church near us to the nature preserve to read Project Ezra and preach.  This morning he took our youngest instead.  They read one of Matt Johnson’s lists of the Characteristics of Christ and handed out water bottles with Godpel tract labels on them.  They both had a blast.  I get a call from my husband on his way home saying that the police had been called on him.  My first initial reaction was “OH GREAT!  Our youngest will never want to go out again.  He will be totaly freaked out.  Turns out everything was AWESOME.  The police officer did come and he told my husband that he could stay as long as he wanted that he was not doing anything wrong.

So off we go to Chruch.  After Sunday School is over our youngest and his teacher come over to talk to us.  He had told his whole class about the expereience and the class had prayed not only for the guy who called the police but all those who heard the Gospel.  It was one of those mommy moments that you just feel so proud of your kid.

Jesus is…

If you have been following this blog at all then you probably saw my article recently which referred you to the messages and research that Matt Johnson did on preaching about the Excellencies of Christ. I had been praying for awhile about reading the entire list of attributes of Christ in the open air. Lately, I’ve been doing Project Ezra with Pastor Ben from First Baptist Hebron. However, when he was unable to join me today due to illness, I decided to use the list of the attributes of Christ instead of the normal Project Ezra reading.

My Facebook friend Rob-Roy Nelson provided me with some water bottle Gospel tracts. My youngest son went with me me to Arbor Hills Nature Preserve in Plano.  I’ve done Project Ezra at this park many times. Brendan handed out the bottles of water. While I read.

So, I am standing on my box reading “Jesus is … Advocate with the Father. John 1 says ‘My little children, I am writing these things to you that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.'”

Then moving on to the next attribute I said, “Jesus is The Alpha and the Omega. Revelation 22 says, ‘Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.'”

I continued reading off the attributes of Chris. So over and over people in the park heard “Jesus is…”

Brendan was doing a great job handing out the bottles of water. He would take the water bottles and track people down to give them to people. I notice a few people once they had the water, walking away reading the label.

Eventually a man came up and said, “do you have a permit to do this?”

I said, “no, and I don’t need one. I am simply exercising my right to free speech.”

He said, “I don’t think it is right. You should stop.”

I told him that I had the right to be there and the command from God to share the Gospel. We spoke briefly. He said he was an atheist. I asked where creation came from. He said that scientists are “working on it.” He claimed that if we give the scientists enough time they would figure it out. I told him they need to look no further then Genesis 1:1. He had his cell phone in his hand when he turned to walk away. Brendan gave him a water bottle and I returned to reading the attributes of Christ.

As I looked over towards the direction he was walking off I could see that he was on his phone. I told Brendan that he was probably calling the police. I told him not to worry, that I am not doing anything wrong and that if the police come to just remain calm.

Sure enough, five minutes later a police car came up. I got down off the box and greeted the office. He said, “you don’t have to stop. I simply came by to let you know that we got a complaint, but that you are not doing anything wrong and can stay as long as you like.” I thanked him for his time and offered him a bottle of water which he declined.

So add to the list, “Jesus is offensive!” Actually we know that the cross is an offense to those that are perishing.

After I finished reading all the attributes of Christ on the list, Brendan and I packed up and went to the car. We handed out the last two water bottles as we loaded the cooler into the car. We then drove home and went to church.

At church we first had Sunday school. After Sunday school, Brendan’s teacher said, “we prayed for the guy that called the police on you!” So I shared the story with a number of people at church.

I am thankful that the officer knew the law and my rights. I am thankful that it was not a hassle. We have already had to “fight” the City of Plano over free speech issues. And I certainly did not want to have to do that again. The Gospel went out.

Heaven or Hell?

I was at the mall at lunch with a couple of friends sharing the Gospel. One friend had ridden to the mall with me. As we were leaving, he was saying how we see so many people and we don’t even know if they are going to heaven or hell. As we walked out through one of the department stores towards the parking lot, he said, “for instance, there are three women over there and we don’t know if they are going to heaven or hell.”

So I pulled some tracts out of my pocket and I went over and asked them. I walked up and said, “my friend and I were just discussing that we see all these people around here and we don’t know if they are going to heaven or hell. So I thought I’d tell you how to get to heaven.” With that, I simply handed them each a Gospel tract. They said thanks. Two of the three started immediately reading the tracts. The other put them down. Since they were all working, I said goodbye. They thanked me for stopping!

Bible verses for Evangelism

I was recently asked, “what are some key verses for Evangelism?” I came up with a list that includes the following:

  • Genesis 3:15, 6:5
  • Exodus 20
  • Isaiah 7:10-14, 9:6, 52:7, 53 (especially 1, 4, 6, 7), 55:6, 55:11, 59:1-2, 61:1
  • Jeremiah 1:5
  • Ezekiel 18:4
  • Mark 1:15
  • John 3:3, 3:16-19, 3:36, 14:1-6
  • Acts 17:30-31, 17:32
  • Romans 1:15, 3:23, 6:23, 8:1
  • 1 Corinthians 1:23-25, 15:3
  • 2 Corinthians 4:3-4
  • Galatians 3:8
  • Ephesians 2 (especially v 1, 5, 8-10)
  • Philippians2:9-11
  • Colossians 1:21-22
  • 1 Timothy 2:3-6, 4:1-3
  • 2 Timothy 4:1-5
  • Hebrews 1:1-2, 9:15, 11:24-26, 12:1-2, 12:24
  • James 2:10, 2:23, 4:14-15
  • 1 John 1:5-10, 2:2, 3:4, 3:8, 4:19, 5:2-3, 5:11-12
  • Jude 23
  • Revelation 21:8

Then I was asked “what if you were to narrow this list to 4-6 key verses that must be memorized?” So I narrowed the list to:

Out of that list if I had to pick only 6 of them

  1. Hebrews 9:27 – because it tells us that there is no reincarnation, that everyone will die and there will be a judgment. This is the lead into the good person test
  2. John 3:19 – because it shows why any man would choose not to follow Christ
  3. John 3:36 – because it shows that man has one of two places to go
  4. Mark 1:15 – because this IS the Gospel in a nut shell
  5. Romans 1:15 – because this gives me great comfort in witnessing. If I can share the gospel with someone they have everything they need to be saved.
  6. Revelation 21:8 – because this says that all liars will go to hell. Very easy to share with people with the good person test.

I’d love your input. What are your key verses to know to Evangelize? Please post a comment.

Lunchtime at Brookhaven College

On of our favorite local fishing holes for nice weather is Brookhaven College in Dallas. We went out there a few times last year. The college has a nice free speech zone by the fountain in the middle of campus. By turning in a form we can request use of the area. In order to get the kids to come and talk to us, we put up a sign advertising free water.

Last Monday, as we were putting up the sign, we already had our first customers! In an hour we handed out a case of Origin of Species books that I had left over from last November. We also handed out about fifty bottles of water and shared the Gospel one on one and in small groups the entire time. All four of us were constantly engaged in conversations.

I spoke with a man who was raised Catholic, a couple of muslims and a couple of kids who were agnostic. I also had a wonderful conversation with two young ladies who had never heard the Gospel before, but they were very receptive.

We also handed out about a half dozen copies of Mark Cahill’s One Heartbeat Away book. I pray that these kids will read these resources that they got and come to saving faith in Jesus Christ.

We look forward to going back to Brookhaven College a couple more times before the end of the spring semester.
