Rough Riders Outreach

On Saturday night five of us met at the Rough Riders game in Frisco, TX for an outreach. We arrived about 90 minutes before the game. We brought plenty of Baseball Trivia tracts, bottles of water, the preaching stand, amp and the cross. We set up by the main intersection between the mall and the stadium so that we could catch a lot of foot traffic of people walking to the game. We had enough people to have three of the four corners of the intersection covered which also meant that people pretty much had to pass someone in order to get to the stadium.

While we were there, Brian and I went up to the stadium, handed out tracts and had a few one on one conversations. A couple of high school boys who go to the Catholic high school in Dallas said that their principal had told them that they were going to heaven because of their school enrollment. I suggested that the principal needed to read the Bible and asked them to do the same. They both got tracts.

Back at the corner, I read from John 3 and preached the Law and Gospel. Then Ben continued reading in John 4 and also preached. David read John 3 and 4. We also took turns standing with the cross.

In all we handed out over 500 tracts, gave out about 50 bottles of water and preached the Law and Gospel for over an hour!

A great time was had by all. We are considering an outreach to the Texas Rangers stadium in Arlington soon.

Second day of door hangars

Today was the second day that I went out to hand out our new door hangars. I went with six members of First Baptist Hebron in Carrollton. First Baptist has set a goal to take the Gospel to every house in the 75010 zip code. We marked off one neighborhood that has 225 houses. With seven of us we were able to cover each house in about 45 minutes. Five of us continued to another neighborhood and covered another 136 houses. So that is 361 more houses that have received the Gospel. Please pray for the people who receive these door hangars to read them, reach out to us or First Baptist, order the DVD and above all, repent and trust Jesus.

While we were out handing out the door hangars, I had a text from a friend whom I had given some door hangars a couple of days ago indicating that he and his boys had just walked around the block and put out door hangars. Praise God. What a great activity to do with your sons!

If you are interested in receiving a shipment of 100 door hangars to get started with door to door in your neighborhood then please let me know.

94 door hangars distributed!

They’re here
The door hangar shipment was finally located. Turns out that UPS delivered them to my address PLUS 10. But, fortunately, the woman who received them called last night and I went and picked them up from her.

Shipped 1600 door hangars
We offered 100 door hangars to anyone who would go hand them out in their neighborhood to get them started with door to door. Today at lunch, I mailed 1600 door hangars out to those who had requested them. another 300 are being labeled by a local church for distribution on Saturday. I got three more requests for door hangars today. Those will go in the mail soon. It’s not too late. If you’d like some door hangars to get started with a door to door ministry in your neighborhood then let me know and I’ll mail them out to you.

First Distribution
Since I’ve been waiting for a long time to receive the door hangars, I was anxious to go and distribute some. So tonight, I spent about 45 minutes distributing them. I reached 94 houses. One thing I noticed is that it seemed like no one was home. So the fact that I was simply leaving something on the door turned out to be a good thing. While I walked and distributed the door hangars I was praying for the neighborhood. The picture at the right is the first door hangar distributed to a house in Carrollton, TX.

Strategy
I plan to canvass a few neighborhoods in order to get a sense of what percentage of people are likely to request the door hangars. I don’t plan to only door canvassing. At some point, I will go back to my previous door to door method (food drive, prayer request and sharing the Gospel) with the change being that I’d give them the door hangar or leave it on the door instead of the Good News / Bad News tract that I have been using.

Resources
There are a couple of resources that are handy for mapping your progress with door to door. The first is to use maps.google.com to map an area. Print the map, then use a highlighter to mark where you have been. The second resource is something I’ve been using in my running. It is www.gmap-pedometer.com and it allows you to map paths. For example, the path that I walked tonight to hand out door hangars is here.

Preaching at UT on new folding stool

Last week I had the opportunity to participate in Project Ezra in Austin, on the edge of the campus of the University of Texas. It was a great experience. I actually was not sure what the suggested reading for Project Ezra was. I had in my mind to go to the state capital and preach there. However, as I drove by the University of Texas, there were many people congregating and crossing Guadelupe St. So, I felt like God was telling me that this was the place. So I parked the car and walked over to the cross walk area. I had a new folding stool that I had bought the night before at Bed Bath and Beyond. This new stool is very lightweight and compact. I expect to be able to put it in my backback. On this occassion, I simply took it, my Bible and about 100 Gospel tracts.

Since I was not sure what the Project Ezra reading was for the week, I had in mind to read 1 John again since it was the reading from the week before. When I got where I was going to preach from, I sent a text message to a few friends to ask them to pray. After sending the text, I noticed on my phone that there was new email. When I pulled up the email there was a message from Project Ezra that the suggested reading was 1 Peter 1. I read over the email and then the text.

I prayed.

And then I got up on my new stool.

I read 1 Peter 1.

Then I preached the Law and the Gospel. Many people walked by and heard the preaching. Several stopped to listen. Several listened while waiting to cross the street.

When I had preached all I could, I turned to the attributes of Christ that I have pasted into the front and back of my Bible. I began reading these attributes as I have done several times in the past. I continued reading and lifting up the name of Christ.

Eventually the wind began to swirl and some clouds rolled in. A felt a couple of rain drops. Then some drops hit my Bible and the ink in my list of the Attributes of Christ started to run. I decided it was time to go.

I handed out a few more tracts on my way back to the car. As I walked, the rain steadily increased until it was pouring by the time I got to the car.

The new folding stool is available in four colors at Bed Bath and Beyond. I got mine for $14.99. The tag says that the weight limit is 300 pounds!

Interview with a Biology Professor

In November (2009) I joined a group of people at the University of Texas at Austin handing out books with Living Waters’ Origin into Schools project. While we were on the campus doing that, we meet one of the professors from UT who was a self proclaimed atheist. I asked him what evidence he had that evolution is true and he said it was too complicated to go into on the streets. One of the members of our team had a chance to sit down with him that day. After the event, I looked up his contact information on the UT web site and have exchanged afew emails with him. He offered to get together if I ever found myself in Austin again. As it turns out, I spent this week in Austin and had the chance to sit down with him and have a cup of coffee together.

I had three basic goals in meeting with him.First, I wanted to understand how he came to his atheistic beliefs. Second, I wanted a chance to clearly present the Biblical Gospel to him. Third, above all, I wanted God to be glorified by the meeting.

I believe that all three objectives were met.

I asked him a series of questions starting with work, then to family, then to family history and finally to spiritual background. As he chrnoicaled his spiritual background from organized religion, to studying the Bible and then to atheism, he indicated that science could always explain his position with science, there was essentially no need for God. Eventually the Bible study stopped as he had no need for it. There are a couple things I’d especially like to make note of from our conversation.

I had wondered why he objected to Origin into Schools. It seems to me if a person is an atheist then they should not object to the preaching of the Gospel. From their perspective, the preacher believes in something that does not exist and is teaching others about the same thing. He agreed with that part. His objection to Origin into Schools was regarding criticism of scientific work – Origin of Species. He went on to say that he also gets angry when people attack “science” like when they claim that autism is caused by vaccinations.
He said we have common ancestors with the trees back to single cell. But he said he does not know where the single cell life form came from. I asked if God could have created it. He said yes.

Then we talked about kinds. I said could God have created those kinds like the Bible says. He said yes. But then he added that 6000 years is not enough time for the changes in species within the kinds to have occured.

He also asked, why God had to rest after the six days of creation. I told him it was a model for man and that God neither slumbers nor sleeps. I asked him if he would use that as an objection to God on the day of judgment.
I was able to share the Law and Gospel with him. I gave him an amazing body Gospel tract, a print out of a Darwin tract and a copy of Mark Cahill’s One Heartbeat Away.
It was a good meeting. He said to call again next time I am in Austin. I’ll keep the dialog open.

Celebrate Freedom

Since March, we’ve been planning an outreach in The Colony, TX along with First Baptist Church Hebron from the Fourth of July weekend. The events were to take place on Saturday, the 3rd. We had been to the park a few weeks prior to map out where we would set up to hand out water and Gospel tracts and preach the Gospel. The weather did not cooperate. When we realized the rain was headed that way, we moved up our meeting time and headed out to the park thinking we could get some tracts and preaching out before the weather hit. However, about 15 minutes after we arrived, it started to rain. And, not just rain, but a good old fashioned Texas downpour. We took cover and started praying for a backup plan. Mande was checking the weather map via her phone and also different towns to see where there might be another July 4th celebtration we could go to. I pulled out my phone and saw an email from Jon Speed. He had sent a message that Tim Crawford was going to Southlake Town Square. Mande confirmed the radar looked clear. I called TIm to verify they were still going. So we headed to Southlake.

When we arrived we grabbed about 500 tracts and headed out on the streets to meet up with Tim. We found him and he said, “we are out of tracts.” He had brought about 20 youth group members to teach them how to evangelize. So we gave them the tracts we had and then headed back to the car to get the rest of the ones that we had there. When we returned, we loaded up Tim’s team again.

Then we got to work handing out tracts. There were people everywhere. As we handed out tracts most would say “thanks!”
I walked up to a group of teens and handed them Bucket List tracts. Then I asked them “if you had one week to live, what things would be on your list of things to do before you die?” I thought the eyes of one girl were going to pop out of her head when I asked this. We had a good discussion and it turned out several of the kids were Christian. Then one boy asked me, “why does God send some people to hell.” So I talked with him alone and explained that because we have broken God’s Law that we deserve to go to hell and that God is just in sending us there. But, if we repent and trust Christ then He will give us eternal life. He thanked me for talking to him.

I had two really great conversations with two different groups of teens by handing them “can you name ten beers” tracts. The two conversations went a little different. Both groups named the ten beers. The first named all ten of the commandments too. The second group, got stuck on 8 commandments. What was neat was that as they tried to get the last two, they would stop people who were walking by to ask them “do you know the second commandment?” I was giving tracts to those that came by as well. Eventually I told them the last two commandments and shared the Gospel with them. The first group was soundly saved, members of the same youth group. We had a wonderful time of fellowship. The second group was mostly Christians. One Catholic girl claimed to have actually kept the Ten Commandments. I tried to explain to her that “all have sinned” but she clung to her religion.

At that point we went to grab a hamburger for dinner. While we were eating, fireworks began going off right across the street. (See picture above) We watched most of the show then headed towards the car and watched the end of the show from the parking garage.

All it all, it seems that over 3,000 tracts we distributed by our group. Please pray that all these seeds take root!

Pastor Ben reported to me that when they got home from Southlake that The Colony fireworks were just ending. So they went over there and handed out tracts and did a little preaching. Then on Sunday (4th) they went to Lewisville and handed out another 500 tracts and preached for an hour. Praise God!

Sorry for the delay

For those of you waiting to receive door hangars from us, there has been a delay. The first order has been lost by UPS. We are trying to get this located. I’ll post an update when we have a better idea of when we will have the door hangars to send out.
