Sharing the Gospel with a Mormon on omegle

What do you do when you make a commitment to share the Gospel everyday and then get stuck at home because of the weather? Well, you can share the Gospel online. So that is what I did tonight. I used omegle, where you can talk to strangers! I had about three attempts of talking to different people who disconnected as soon as I mentioned anything spiritual. On the next conversation I decided to simply paste the text of one of my Gosple tracts into the window. So that way I knew the person at least got the Gospel. When I did they asked “what religion are you?” I told them I was a Christian and they told me that they were mormon. I got to share the Gospel with him. He told me that his eternity was based on his own goodness that would send him to one of three kingdoms. Then he later told me it was dependent on Jesus. When I asked him to clarify which it was – his own goodness, or Jesus – he took a long pause, then sent me some LDS information which I assume he copied from someplace. I asked one more question and suddenly they said that they had to go.

I thought your comment about omegle was interesting–I’ve never heard of it. Is it always a random connection or would you be able to find the person you spoke with again?

When people ask me as a Mormon whether I’m saved by my works or by Jesus, I like to quote Brigham Young who said, “The Latter-day Saints believe in the Gospel of the Son of God, simply because it is true. They believe in baptism for the remission of sins, personal and by proxy; they believe that Jesus is the Savior of the world; they believe that all who attain to any glory whatever, in any kingdom, will do so because Jesus has purchased it by his atonement.”

I appreciate you taking the time to read the BLOG and post your comment. I wish I had been able to copy the dialog from Omegle over to my blog but for some reason the save dailog feature was not working properly. The book of mormon states:

“We know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do,” (2 Nephi 25:23)

This is very different than the teachings of Paul in the Bible in Ephesians 2:8-10

8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Notice that the Book of Mormon is teaching that works is a part of salvation whereas the Bible is teaching that works is a result of salvation.

I’m sorry not to have replied earlier, Carl; but I would disagree with your conclusions above. Even if we’re saved by grace “after all we can do” we’re still saved by grace, not by our works. The fact that God requires our actions in way changes the source, cause or means of salvation–that being the merit, mercies and grace of Jesus Christ, but there are enough passages in the Bible tying our behavior to salvation to demonstrate that imputed righteousness saves no one. Christ is the author of eternal salvation to them that obey him (Hebrews 5:9); and we are saved “if” we remember the things taught by the apostles. (1 Cor. 15:1-2) That word “if” is very important.

above should read “in no way” instead of “in way.”

Alma – there is a significant difference betwen

    works + grace (Mormon belief)

    and

    saved by grace (Biblical teaching)

Now if you look carefully at the passage in Ephesians 2, you’ll notice that the good works, follow salvation. They do not lead to salvation as the Mormon belief teaches.
