How to hand a tract to a cashier

Recently I was asked, “What do you usually say when you hand it (a tract) to a cashier, etc?” I emailed a reply to the person that asked. But, I thought the question was of general interest, so I thought it would be useful to share the information here as well.

In our Basic Evangelism Training Seminar, we teach to “always” say “Did you get on of these?” The questions promotes curiosity. One time, I was at lunch with a friend who had been to our seminar. I handed a tract to the cashier and said, “here is a Gospel tract for you.” The cashier took the tract and said thank you.

My friend looked at me and said, “I thought you were supposed to say ‘did you get one of these?'”

The point is, that is a guideline that works well in most situations. It works especially well at events where you are tracting a crowd. However, there is no certain thing you must say when handing out tracts.

Often, when I am checking out with a cashier, I will use the old stand by “did you get one of these?” and hand them the tract.

But then, sometimes I’ll say something like “here is a gift for you … it has a Gospel message on the back” or simply “here is a gospel tract for you”. I smile and hand the tract to them. Normally they will take it and say thank you.

If I have one with trivia, a riddle or some interesting facts, then I might introduce it as “here is some Christmas trivia for you” or “here is some football trivia for you”. Again, in each case, hand them the tract as you say it. You’ll be surprised, most people will take it. Most will say thank you!

When they ask what it is, you can say “a Gospel tract”. Then based on their responses you’ll start to sense if they are interested in talking. If they are, then ask “what do you think happens when you die?” or “do you think you are good enough to go to heaven?” Remember the tract serves both as a segway of the conversation and a gospel message they can read later.

If they will talk, that is great. The main thing is keep trying. The more you practice the more natural it will become. No two situations are exactly the same, but many are similar. So keep at it.
